Strathmore Cricket Club News story

The View From Lochside

Cricket on the Field

Three Counties Cup

The first eleven again reached the semi-final, which was played at Perth’s Doo’cot Park on Sunday 16th July. In front of an excellent travelling support the team put in a brave, but ultimately unsuccessful effort against Mannofield.  A big thanks to all those who travelled to Perth where we were clearly the best supported side.

Cricket Scotland Challenge Cup

The first team finally bowed out of the Challenge Cup on Sunday 6 August. The semi-final defeat to (eventual winners) Irvine came in an ultimately unsatisfactory 10 over thrash, which didn’t necessarily play to our strengths. Credit to the team for getting any kind of a game played and thanks to them for travelling all the way to the windy, wet, West coast to represent the club.

Strathmore Union

The 1st XI have picked up a few important wins in the second half of the season but still find themselves sitting just above the bottom two going into the final match of the season against, league champions, Stoneywood-Dyce on Saturday.

Heading into the final match, overseas am. Chris Stevenson is sitting 2nd in the SPCU top run-scorers for the season and will be hoping for a strong performance to potentially push himself up to the top. Chris has scored one century this season and has been very consistent at the top of the batting order.

Throughout the second half of the season, the team has benefitted from the return of local, kiwi Shaun Wilkie who (after recovering from an ankle injury suffered bowling his first ball in the country) has added some much needed fire-power to the bowling attack.

The 2nd XI had a quiet time throughout July but have been back in action with a couple of wins in recent weeks and will be hoping to continue that good form in their final 3 matches.

All Stars

All of our little stars have continued to attend and enjoy their first experiences of cricket after the initial 8-week programme ended. Remarkably, only a couple of sessions in the whole summer have been lost to the rain – and that makes such a difference. The All Stars season comes to an end on 25 August with a games night (water fight included) and presentation of certificates.

A big thanks to Jenny and all of the team who have delivered All Stars – especially Dave and Ryan who have assisted with delivery. And let’s not forget all of the parents who have given the programme their support and the bar staff who have turned out early to make sure that refreshments are available.

So our first run of All Stars has been a big hit – and we’re already planning for a repeat over the winter.

Off the Field

Great to see former overseas amateur GT in town in July, linking up with old friends and lending support to the team. Kels is also around at the moment and should be at the club at some point this weekend.

Pert Bruce are holding an "Away day” for all their staff at the club on Friday 8 September. That’s a first for the club – we think – and another strand of business that we might be able to develop further in the future. Let’s hope for a sunny day.

Thanks to everyone at the Mason’s Arms for their kind donation of £194.11 to support our club developments. As always, we are grateful for your support.

Congratulations to George Peters who reached the venerable age of 90 recently. May there be many more cricket years to come.

 Hit the Deck

Our crowd funding appeal was a big success reaching its £5000 target in cash and kind. We are still working to finalise the figure but we received donations of over £4000 in cash and commitments of in-kind support for our building project.

We now know that we have raised the funding required to build the new deck. We are also hopeful of being able to replace the lounge windows at the same time.

Planning for the work is going ahead and our big target is to have the deck – at the very least – in place before season 2018.

Bag Pack

We have a bag pack at Tesco planned for Saturday 16 September 2017 to raise funds for an overseas player for next season. If you can help for an hour or two during the day, let us know by email, Facebook or putting your name on the list in the club.

Pool League

The pool league season starts up again this week and, for the first time in a while, we have two teams in the league. Good luck to both sides!
