Strathmore Cricket Club 1st XI v Huntly on Sat 19 Jun 2021 at 1pm
Strathmore Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets
Match report
On Saturday Strathmore welcomed Huntly on match day 5 of their Breedon NE Championship league campaign.
Liam Sweeney lost the toss again and Huntly elected to bat first, which was a brave decision considering the conditions and the likelihood that the ball was going to swing.
Huntly’s opening batsmen, Michael Clark and Cameron Stewart, looked likely to frustrate the Strathmore opening bowlers as they put on 38 runs in the first 15 overs. However, Strathmore’s opening bowlers found their lines and lengths early on and, with excellent support from the fielders, made batting exceedingly difficult.
Once again, the captain (Liam Sweeney), made good use of his bowling attack and by the end of the 18th over Huntly had lost their top order, including the extremely dangerous captain, Jack Mitchell. Despite some big hitting cameos from Darren Morrison (18 off 34 balls) and Dan Lentz (32 not out off 39 balls) Huntly could only post 115 runs after 39 of their 45 overs. A mention must be made of Lewis Petrie who was making his debut for Huntly at the ripe old age of 14 years.
The wickets were shared between Imran Saim (3 for 20 runs), Liam Sweeney (2 for 14 runs), Haseeb Kiyani (2 for 17 runs) and Uthman Ahmed (2 for 3 runs).
Huntly’s hopes of an against the odds win were briefly raised as they took two quick wickets to leave Strathmore on 5 for 2 wickets in the second over.
However, a outstanding partnership of 75 runs between Imran Saim and Matthew Simpson in the next 10 overs settled the Strathmore nerves.
Imran Saim was the third wicket to fall, having made 39 runs to go with his 3 wicket contribution in the Huntly innings.
Matthew Simpson (48 not out) and Sami Ejaz (10 not out) knocked off the required 37 runs in the next 4 overs as Strathmore won by 7 wickets.
The win moves Strathmore up to third in the league behind the unbeaten Freuchie CC and Falkland CC.
