Strathmore Cricket Club 1st XI v Arbroath on Sat 26 Jun 2021 at 1pm
Strathmore Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report Strathmore extend winning streak in the NE League.

Strathmore welcomed Arbroath United CC 2nd XI to Lochside Park on match day six of the Breedon NE Championship. Liam Sweeney extended his losing streak at the toss and Arbroath elected to bat first on a pitch that was dry and hard although, with overcast conditions, the ball was expected to swing.

Arbroath lost their first wicket in the second over as John Salmond missed a full toss which hit him on the pads and saw the umpire raise his finger after strident appeals from the Strathmore players.

Ben Plomer and Bruce Pritchard then steadied the ship and put on 30 runs for the second wicket before Ben (18 off 28 balls), struggling with a pulled muscle, was bowled by Sami Ejaz. This led to a mini collapse as first Bruce (19 off 41 balls) was caught by Sami off his own bowling and then Matthew Salmond was bowled by Kris Grant without scoring.

At this stage Arbroath where in a spot of bother at 49 for 4 after 14 overs and needed a couple of partnerships to re-build their innings. Blair Carnegie and the Arbroath captain, Greg Peal, began the recovery with a battling 53 run partnership in the next 12 overs and the projected score looked to be in excess of 200 runs. Liam sensed the danger and brought himself on and the pressure on the Arbroath pair ramped up as the run rate started to fall below 4 runs an over. The pressure resulted in Blair (32 off 44 balls) chipping a soft shot to mid on where Jonnie Blackie pouched a straightforward catch.

Greg was then joined by Mark Edwards, and they continued to struggle to get Liam and Haseeb Kiyani away. As a result, they only managed to add 31 runs in the next 12 overs before Haseeb eventually put Greg (37 off 72 balls) out of his misery. Mark was joined by Lee Paterson, and they upped the run rate slightly, putting on 34 runs in the next 7 overs, before Mark (36 off 51 balls) was dismissed by Uthman Ahmed of the penultimate ball of the Arbroath innings.

Jon Burnett joined Lee (9 not out off 25 balls) in the middle and promptly showed everybody how easy the batting lark was, hitting Uthman for a magnificent 6 runs off the last ball of the innings. Arbroath finished their innings on 173 for 7 wickets, leaving Strathmore needing 174 to extend their winning streak.

Bowling performances of note for Strathmore came from Sami Ejaz (8–1–28–2), Kris Grant (9–0–35–2) and Liam Sweeney (9–2–18–0).

Strathmore’s top order have been in great form during the past few weeks, and they continued that form when they went into bat. Imran Saim was the first to go as he gave Blair an easy catch at mid-off to leave Strathmore on 7 for 1 wicket in the 2nd over.

Nigel Hazel, surviving being dropped in the slips on 7 in the 4th over, and Haydn Evans settled the nerves as they pushed the score onto 42 in the eighth over. Haydn (25 off 25 balls) then became Matthew’s second victim as he was caught behind off a ball that Matthew nipped away.

Nigel was joined in the middle by Matthew Simpson, and they continued the steady progress with a partnership of 74 runs in the next 15 overs, keeping Strathmore ahead of the rate required. At this point Nigel (42 off 76 balls) was struggling with a tweaked hamstring and he gave Lee Paterson a sharp catch off his own bowling. Matthew was the next to go having added 19 in partnership with Sami Ejaz. Matthew (39 off 47 balls) was looking to hit the boundaries but looked to have fallen to a well-set trap as he was caught at point by Murry Clark.

Sami (22 off 21 balls) continued the big hitting but eventually succumbed to a quicker ball from Bruce Pritchard. At this point Strathmore were on 149 for 5 after 29 overs and required 24 runs to secure the win. Haseeb Kiyani (14 not out off 12 balls) was joined by Jonnie Blackie (13 not out off 9 balls) and they knocked off the required runs in the next three overs.

Bowling performances of note for Arbroath came from Lee Paterson (6–0–47–2) and Matthew Salmond (5–0–41–2).

With the win Strathmore moved up to second place in the Breedon NE Championship.
