Strathmore Cricket Club 1st XI v Arbroath on Thu 08 Jul 2021 at 6pm
Strathmore Cricket Club Won by 5 runs

Match report Strathmore beat Arbroath by 5 runs in final Scottish T20 group game

Strathmore were without their captain, Liam Sweeney, and four other first team stalwarts as they welcomed Arbroath United’s 1st XI to Lochside Park for the final group game in the SPCU Central Section, with Arbroath looking for a win to top the table.
Strathmore won the toss for a change and elected to bat first in chilly, overcast conditions.

Imran Saim (39 off 35 balls) and Mubeen Akhtar (21 off 30 balls) opened the batting and shared a run a ball partnership of 51 runs before Mubeen fell to Ramsey in the 9th over, looking to up the run rate. Four quick wickets fell for 37 runs in 5 overs as first Sami tried to steal a quick single, Gary got a big inside edge onto his wickets and Imran (LBW) and Monk (Caught at Leg Slip) were both out trying to sweep the Arbroath spinners.

This bought Bilal Ahmad (28 not out off 25 balls), making his 1st team debut, and Haseeb Kiyani (14 not out off 12 balls) together in the 15th over with the score at 88 for 5. Both made steady progress to move the score to 113 for 5 in the 19th over and then unleashed the big guns, scoring 21 runs in the final over to ensure that Arbroath were set a target of 135 to win.

The Arbroath openers got off to a flying start hitting 20 runs off the first 15 balls, before Craig Cameron (14 off 9 balls) tried to launch Ejaz over mid-on. Fortunately, his timing was slightly off, and he could only cloth it to Mubeen Akhtar at mid-on who pouched an easy catch.

Strathmore’s catching was spot on as first Ross McLean (9 off 10 balls) and Marc Petrie (15 off 15 balls) were caught to leave Arbroath 65 for 3 in the eleventh over.

At this stage Strathmore were in the ascendancy but needed to be aware of the two remaining, recognised 1st XI batsmen from Arbroath, Daryl Sinclair and Matthew Parker. Sinclair (29 off 36 balls) was the next to go as Saim managed to beat Sinclair’s bat and get the LBW decision, leaving Arbroath on 81 for 4 in the 13th over.

Parker was joined at the crease by Lee Paterson, and they proceeded to move the score along to 109 in the 17th over, before Parker (32 off 20 balls) chipped a simple catch to Saim at mid-off, much to Strathmore’s delight, off the last ball of the 17th over.

Arbroath required 26 of the last three overs and Paterson remained positive and ran hard, moving the score to 122 in the 19th over before he skied one and was caught behind by Uthman Ahmed.

That left Arbroath needing 12 runs off the last over which was bowled by Ejaz, who managed to limit them to 6, whilst taking a sharp caught and bowled to remove Craig Ramsey, giving Strathmore the win by 5 runs.
