Return to Cricket
Good Practise Guide

General Guidance

  • Players/coaches should only work in groups containing people from up to 3 households (up to a maximum of 8 people)
  • Players should only touch their own cricket balls during drills and should retain these for use at future sessions
  • Where a coach/partner has to handle a ball as part of a drill, they should wear a disposable glove and dispose of it after each participant has completed the drill
  • Where a coach/partner has to use batting gloves, a catching mitt or wicket-keeping gloves , they should either:
    • Wear their own gloves and share these with no-one
    • Wear a disposable glove as an “inner” and dispose of it after each use
  • Wipe down the exterior of the glove/mitt after each fielder
  •  Use the hand sanitiser provided at the completion of each drill

Bowling to an Empty Net

  • A bowler may bowl into an empty net
  • The bowler should only use balls which they provide or which have been allocated to them
  • The bowler should pick their own balls up.
  • The balls used should be kept by that player and put into their kit for use at further bowling or fielding sessions.
  • No saliva or sweat should be applied to the ball.
  • Use the hand sanitiser provided at the completion of each bowling session

Bowling to a Coach/Partner/Wicket-keeper

  • Bowlers should use their own balls (including those allocated to them). Coaches should wear their own mitt, with a disposable glove on the other hand. If a mitt is being shared, the coach should wear a disposable glove as an “inner” and dispose of it after use
  • Coaches/partners should use their own mitt to catch the ball and return the ball to the bowler using their gloved hand.
  • No saliva or sweat should be applied to the ball
  • Mitts should be cleaned with disinfectant or detergent wipes between bowlers
  • Gloves should be disposed of after every bowler
  • Use the hand sanitiser provided at the completion of each drill

Bowling to a Batter

  • Maintain wide social distancing
  • Bowlers should use their own balls and be responsible for collecting them, from the net and when hit in to the outfield
  • Bowlers should observe social distances when waiting to bowl. There can be up to seven bowlers, providing they do not belong to more than three households. The more likely number of bowlers is one or two
  • Batters should not handle the balls at any time
  • Batter should move to the back of the net when bowlers are collecting balls – they can kick/knock balls back towards the bowler but minimum of 2m social distancing needs to be maintained
  • The ball should be collected by the bowler after each delivery, to avoid the risk of balls becoming mixed up
  • No saliva or sweat should be applied to the ball.
  • Use the hand sanitiser provided at the completion of each drill

Batting with a Bowling Machine

Note: it is unlikely that the bowling machine will be in use during early sessions

  • A batter can bat against a bowling machine, providing this has been erected for them by the club.
  • The same coach should feed for the whole session, which limits the number of batters in a session to two, unless more than one of them lives in the same household
  • Coach feeding – the coach should pick the balls – and not the batter. Batters should not touch the balls at any time
  • All balls should be disinfectant cleaned at the end of each “training group” session and the bowling machine, its frame and stand should be wiped down with disinfectant

Batting with a Sidearm Feed

  • Coaches/feeders should use their own sidearm (if possible)
  • Coaches/feeders should use their own (and allocated) cricket balls
  • Coaches/feeders should collect balls. Batters can kick/knock balls back towards the coach but minimum of 2m social distancing needs to be maintained.
  • If a Sidearm is to be used by more than one feeder, it should be thoroughly cleaned with disinfectant between each user
  • The coach should keep the assigned balls as his/her sidearm balls
  • Use the hand sanitiser provided at the completion of each session

Throwing to a Target or Net

  • A player may throw into an empty net or target
  • The player should use their own (and allocated) balls
  • The player should pick their own balls up
  • The balls should be kept by players and put into their kit for use at further bowling and fielding sessions.
  • Use the hand sanitiser provided at the completion of each drill

Throwing to a Coach or Partner

  • Fielder uses own balls
  • Coaches should wear their own mitt, with a disposable glove on the other hand
  • Coaches should use their own mitt to catch the ball and return the ball to the thrower using their gloved hand.
  • If a mitt is to be used by more than one coach/partner, they should wear a disposable glove as an inner and dispose of it at the end of their use of the mitt
  • Mitts should be cleaned with disinfectant or detergent wipes between fielders
  • Gloves should be disposed of after every fielder has participated in a drill
  • Use the hand sanitiser provided at the completion of each drill

Catching from the Bat

  • Coaches should use their own bat to hit catches one-handed, wearing their own mitt on the other hand to catch and feed the hit
  • Coaches should not directly touch balls.
  • Fielders should use their own balls
  • Mitts should be cleaned with disinfectant or detergent wipes between fielders.
  • Wicketkeeping gloves should be cleaned with disinfectant or detergent wipes after use
  • Use the hand sanitiser provided at the completion of each catching session
