The View From Lochside

23 Jun 2016

 Fun Day at Lochside

It will be fun all day and all the way at Lochside on Saturday 25th June.

During the day - from 10am till 3.30pm - there will be stalls and games for people of all ages, including some cricket games and challenges.

In the evening, there's a beach themed BBQ with all welcome. All you need is a ticket and a willingness to join in the fun.

The fun day and BBQ will, jointly, raise funds for MacMillan Cancer Relief so come on down if you can. If you can't make it on Saturday, you could always make a donation for the raffle or Tombola. All donations would be gratefully received.

Soft Ball Sixes

On Sunday 3rd July, we're running our first ever soft ball sixes day. This is meant to offer an opportunity for people of all ages to have some fun in the Lochside sun (hopefully!) playing some soft ball cricket.

Games will be six-a-side and we're keen to see entries from works teams, groups of friends and families. In fact, we'll welcome anyone who wants a game; individuals can come along and we'll find them a team.

So why not gather some people together and join in?

Regional T20 Cricket

On Sunday 19th June, we were delighted to host Cricket Scotland's women's regional T20 competition.

Two matches were played on the day between the East and the Rest of Scotland sides. Honours were shared as they claimed 1 win each on the day.

We hope that the ladies enjoyed the facilities and the Strathie hospitality and we look forward to welcoming them back before too long.

And what about regular ladies cricket here at Lochside? Wouldn't that be good? Any takers?

An adopted sister for the club?

There's only one Strathmore C.C.! Or is there...?

Well no as it happens. We have a namesake in Melbourne and they are keen to develop links with us.

They have a Veterans side (40+) that is in the process of planning a trip over in a couple of years time to take in some ashes cricket and to come up for a game (with the proposal having been made that we potentially reciprocate a couple of years down the line. Start saving everyone!).

As well as their trip, they are also keen to become proper sister clubs and build relationships that would potentially allow for to players to travel, in either direction, to play should they fancy a winter overseas.

Thriving Clubs

Work continues on our thriving clubs initiative.

Two committee members attend a Cricket Scotland workshop on using social media to promote the club - assuring to know that we're getting lots of things right. But there were some interesting questions and ideas:

  • Could we be "live streaming" some cricket via Facebook?
  • Could Facebook advertising help us to reach new audiences? We're looking into this
  • Could we be using other media that we don't currently use (Instagram/Snapchat)?

So, plenty to think about!

If there's any of you out there who are social media savvy and want to help us come up with the answers, let us know.

We've a workshop with Svend - the sports marketing consultant who runs the Thriving Clubs programme with Cricket Scotland - early in July. No doubt that will bring new ideas and new challenges. We should have more details in our next newsletter...

Knock-out golf tournament

Invitations are out for our Super Sixes knock-out golf tournament in September. Yes, you read that correctly. On 10th September, we're converting Lochside into a six hole golf course and challenging many of our traditional cricket rivals to a team golf challenge. More details on how you can support this venture later in the month.

On the field

The 1st XI followed up their opening win of the season with another the following weekend at Rossie Priory. Since then, however, the weather has been the only winner with the last 2 weeks fixtures being washed out.

The 2nd XI have also gone a couple of weeks without a league match as a result of the rain and a free week.

The draw for the Q/Fs of the 3 Counties Cup sees the 1st XI take on Rossie Priory while the 2nd XI will take on Arbroath or Forthill in the 2 Counties following our victory against Montrose.

This weekend's fixtures:

  • Sat - Perth Doo'cot v 1st XI
  • Sun - Victoria CC v 1st XI (Challenge Cup)
  • Sun - 2nd XI v Forthill
