Newsletter - July 2018

On The Field

The 1st XI picked a much-needed win through at Arbroath last Saturday and will now look to carry some confidence from that result into the remaining 6 games.

The 2nd XI have continued to perform strongly throughout the season having only lost once so far. Hopefully that form can carry on right until the end of the season.

Scottish Women’s Regional Fixture

Following the successful staging of a Scottish Women’s Regional T20 fixture earlier in the season, the club has been asked to host another women’s match on Sunday 26 August 2018. Details have yet to be confirmed, but the day is likely to include a girls’ Kwik Cricket competition in the morning, with the women’s match starting at 1pm.

More details will follow in the next newsletter and through the usual channels.

All Stars

Our 2018 All Stars programme has now come to a conclusion, with the final session and presentation of certificates on Friday 13 July.

Once again we have been blessed with great weather for All Stars; we must be the only club to have gone through two complete programmes with no weather interruptions.

Congratulations to all of our All Stars for their efforts over the eight week programme and we hope that this will be the beginning of a long cricketing association with the club.

A big thanks to parents for bringing the children along and for joining in when asked.

Of course, the end of the “official” All Stars programme does not mark the end of the season for the group. We will be continuing to run sessions on Friday nights through-out the season. So plenty more cricketing fun to be had.

Money Can’t Buy Experiences

Some of our All Stars and their parents enjoyed a special day out on Thursday 12 July when they visited Forthill to see Scotland A play Ireland A in a T20 fixture.

The All Stars had the opportunity to form a guard of honour for the players as they took the field, to take part in some cricket activities and to meet the players for autographs and photographs at the end of the day. More important than all of that (maybe) they got to meet Twinkle, the All Stars mascot and test his cricketing skills.

It wasn’t a great day for Scotland A on the field – they were well beaten – but it was an experience that money can’t buy for our All Stars.

Women’s Soft Ball Cricket

Women’s Soft Ball cricket came to Lochside on Wednesday 28 June, with the first of three soft ball events we have planned for this summer.

Ten women and girls came along and enjoyed some fun on and off the field. There was an introduction to CricHiit – a fitness programme designed specially to offer a work out using cricket skills and movements – a bit of coaching and some cricket games. Just as important, music and refreshments were available through-out.

Our next Women’s Softball Festival is on Wednesday 25 July, from 6.30 – 9pm. We’re hoping to see even more people along to join in the fun. So why not come along to join in, or even just to enjoy the social vibe on the deck.

It’s going to be Expectacular!

Strathmore Softball Smash

Another new event for Lochside is the Softball Smash.

On 12 August, we want to get as many people as possible, of all ages and abilities – on the field and playing soft ball cricket

We want to welcome along:

  • Teams of six, who want to play in a soft ball competition.
  • Individuals who fancy a friendly game
  • Families who want to join in the fun
  • Women and girls
  • Players – who want to enjoy a break from league cricket
  • Ex-players who want to get back on the field

Rules and formats will be adjusted to accommodate those who come along. The idea is to have a fun, inclusive, event that anyone can take part in.

You can register to take part here or contact us via email at StrathmoreCC@hotmail.com

The Smash will start at 11am and run though-out the day.

So why not come along and join in the fun!

Deck Opening

Our fabulous new deck was officially opened on Thursday 29 June 2018 when Rob Wakelin the Director of Participation from Cricket Scotland cut the ribbon.

Rob congratulated the club on its enterprise in raising the funding for the deck and all of the work involved in moving it from idea to reality.

Huge thanks are due to the 50 or so people who contributed directly in some way to the building of the deck – and especially to those who contributed their skills to the construction work.

Building the deck has demonstrated what we can achieve when we pool our talents and efforts. So what might the next project be?

In the few weeks since the opening event, the deck has been well used by members, sponsors and visitors; it is already proving to be a considerable asset to the club.

Club BBQ

Tickets are now available for our Club BBQ on 1 September 2018,.

We are hoping that this will be a BBQ with a difference. It be in three parts – all of which will have a beach theme, which will be reflected in games, dress code etc.

During the day we hope that members of all ages will come along and have some fun. There is no charge for this part of the event.

At 7pm we will be holding a short awards ceremony. This is to recognise the many “off-field” contributions that people make to the club each year.

This will be followed by the food – a Hog Roast.

And finally there will be music and games in to the evening.

Tickets for the evening are priced £15 and can be purchased from the club now. Numbers are limited, so be sure to secure your tickets sooner rather than later.

Forfar Triathlon

This Sunday (22nd), Mark "Stug" Stewart is taking part in the first ever Forfar Triathlon - good luck Mark. If you would like to support him by sponsoring his efforts then you can do so here. All funds raised by Mark are to be shared between Strathmore cricket & rugby clubs for the development of youth sport within the local community.
