Match report Strathmore undone by Freuchie in top of the table clash

Strathmore travelled down to the Kingdom of Fife for a much-anticipated top of the table clash with Freuchie. Confidence was high after a well-deserved victory against Arbroath earlier in the week.

Sweeney duly lost the toss and Freuchie elected to bat first. The Strathmore opening bowlers Sami Ejaz and Kris Grant hit their straps from the off and reduced Freuchie to 34 for 4 in the 10th over. This brought the Freuchie captain, Ian Stonebridge (60 off 70 balls), to the crease and he set about repairing the Freuchie innings with three significant partnerships which added a combined 106 runs over in the next 22 overs.

Ian was the eighth man out leaving Freuchie on 140 for 8. This brought Scott Birrell to the crease to join the Freuchie youngster Robert Wiseman. Strathmore were looking to close out the Freuchie innings but let the advantage slip as Birrell and Wiseman added a further 40 runs in the last 10 overs.

Notable bowling figures for Strathmore were Sami Ejaz with 3 wickets for 25 runs in his 7 overs.

Chasing 181 to win the game and put a stop to the Freuchie 100% record, Strathmore start wasn’t confidence building as they were reduced to 50 for 5 in the 15th over. At this point Matty Simpson was joined at the crease by Jonnie Blackie and they set about building a 48-run partnership, pushing Strathmore onto 96 for 6 in the 23rd over, before Simpson was stumped (34 off 45 balls).

Strathmore were still up with the required rate, but Freuchie were now into the Strathmore tail who need to score at 4 runs an over in the next 20 overs, with Blackie needing to be there at the end, for Strathmore to have any chance of pulling off the win.

Unfortunately, Blackie (33 off 37 balls) was the next man out trying, and failing, to clear the inner circle. The Strathmore tail put up a spirited effort but could only add another 28 runs for the final two wickets.

Freuchie won by 49 runs with notable bowling figures of 4 wickets for 35 runs off 9 overs from Robbie Wright and 3 wickets for 22 runs off 9 overs for Asif Naeem.

Freuchie remain top of the Breedon NE Championship and Strathmore slip to third.
