Perth Doo'cot v Strathmore Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 24 Jul 2021 at 1pm
Match was Tied

Match report Strathmore CC endured a tough and hot weekend, seeing the defence of their Scottish Challenge Cup coming to an end and losing ground to the leaders in the Breedon NE Championship, despite heroic contributions from Matthew Simpson with the bat and Liam Sweeney with the ball.

On Saturday Strathmore travelled to Perth to play Perth Doo’Cot in the Breedon NE Championship where Liam Sweeney won the toss and elected to bat first. With the outfield playing very slow, boundaries were going to be at a premium throughout the day and this proved to be the case for Strathmore who were only able to hit 5 boundaries in their innings.

With all the batsmen struggling to score runs at a consistent rate due to the excellent lines and lengths of the Perth bowlers, Strathmore were only able to set Perth a target of 153 runs thanks to Matthew Simpson (39 off 65 balls) and Gary Hewitson (34 off 54 balls) as they shared a partnership of 59 runs off 71 balls. Kris Grant (13 off 19 balls) and Haseeb Kiyani (14 off 32 balls) saw the Strathmore tail wag briefly as they shared a 25-run partnership at the end of the Strathmore innings.

The Perth teenager, Oliver Patterson, was the pick of the Perth bowlers taking 4 wickets for 17 runs in 7 overs.

Perth began their innings knowing that they needed to score at a rate of 3.4 an over to secure the win and seemed to have the task in hand with contributions from Fawad Ali (31 off 79 balls) and Asif Ali (31 off 62 balls) as Perth reached 121 for 4 at the end of the 37th over. At this stage Strathmore needed to take some wickets and restrict the run rate to stand a chance of winning.

With some astute bowling changes Liam Sweeney was able to achieve the first task as Perth managed to reach the last over with 146 runs on the board for the loss of 7 wickets. This meant that they needed 7 runs off the last over and had three wickets in hand.

What followed was pandemonium as Perth lost three wickets for 6 runs in the final over, including a frantic attempt by Ivor and Oliver Patterson to run three off the last ball, before Ivor was run out to ensure that the game was tied, and the points were shared.

The Perth wickets were shared across the team with Craig McDonald, Haseeb Kiyani and Haydn Evans taking two each, but the Strathmore bowling performance of the day came from Liam Sweeney who took one wicket for seven runs from his 9 overs.

All three clubs should be congratulated for the spirit in which both games were played and the standard of cricket on display throughout, what was at times, a very tense and hot weekend.
