Match report Strathmore CC endured a tough and hot weekend, seeing the defence of their Scottish Challenge Cup coming to an end and losing ground to the leaders in the Breedon NE Championship, despite heroic contributions from Matthew Simpson with the bat and Liam Sweeney with the ball.

On Sunday, Strathmore welcomed Hillhead CC to Lochside Park for the semi-final of the Cricket Scotland Challenge Cup and Liam Sweeney again won the toss and elected to bat first.

With the Strathmore batsmen struggling again against some excellent bowling, which was backed up by some top rate ground fielding, they were once again grateful to Matthew Simpson (76 runs off 108 balls) as Hillhead were set a target of 170 runs to win at a rate of 4.25 runs an over.

Despite Strathmore matching the bowling and fielding standards set by Hillhead in the first innings, they were not able to take wickets at regular intervals, allowing Hillhead to stay ahead of the required rate for much of the match. Shehroz Mehmood (45 off 64 balls), Benjamin Ward (63 off 69 balls) and Jack Holland (34 off 52 balls) ensured that Hillhead reached the last 5 overs needing 24 runs to advance to the final.

Despite a little wobble, losing two wickets for 20 runs in four overs, and giving Strathmore a faint glimpse at glory, Hazan Azhar managed to hit the first ball of the last over, the only ball he faced, to ensure that Hillhead CC progressed to the finals.

All three clubs should be congratulated for the spirit in which both games were played and the standard of cricket on display throughout, what was at times, a very tense and hot weekend.
